Above is the Trailer for the movie, I’m Fine, Thanks
I’m Fine, Thanks. When I first heard there was a movie coming out with this title, I kind of ignored it because it reminded me so much of Korea. (For those of you that don’t know, if you ask any Korean “How are you?”, 85% of them answer “I am fine, thanks.”) Anyway, I finally decided to see what this movie was all about. As it turns out, it has nothing to do with robotic answers, and more to do with the values I blog about and believe in.
I’m Fine, Thanks: Brief Overview
I won’t give you a big plot spoiler in case you want to see the movie. I’m not that guy who ruins it for everyone. You can check the movie out here, by the way. Anyway, the documentary style film covers stories of people who have followed the default path. They did all of what society expected of them. They got the good job. They bought a nice house. They have all of the toys they need. Yet, at the end of the day, most of them feel unfulfilled, uninspired, or even miserable.
The backstory is that the director also settled into the rat race at the expense of his dreams, but overall he has a good and blessed life. He loves his kids and encourages them to follow their dreams. However, he wakes up one day and realizes that he’s been telling his kids to follow their dreams in words, not actions. His passion, his dream, was always to be a filmmaker. So, he recruits some of his tech savvy buddies and they all go out and make this movie. In about 3 months!
I personally enjoyed I’m Fine, Thanks. It resonated with me so much. I recently heard of this new phrase “YOLO“, (what’s up with that, anyway–when did it become popular?) You only live once. Our time on earth is limited, so when you are presented with a great opportunity, go for it! There is no script in life. There is no safe path anymore. We have to embrace uncertainty and make our own decisions in order to live our lives to the fullest. These are some of the core messages of I’m Fine, Thanks.
Follow Your Dreams
I know this sounds cliche. And sometimes it may not be the best advice, especially if we feel lost and don’t know what our dreams are. However, without a doubt, we are only on this earth for a short period of time. And there’s more to life than just sitting behind a cubicle for 20, 30, or 40 years. I think this bears repeating: You only live once (YOLO for those Internet nerds out there), and life is too precious to live the script that someone else or society sets for you. Notes
Some people really love what they are doing in the corporate world. And if that’s the case, then, hey, you are doing what you want to do. That’s the point. If you are perfectly happy and doing the work you want to do, then you’re living the life you want to live.
One such person featured in the movie loved his work as an architect. However, the financial crisis came, and he was faced with uncertainty as he was let go from his job. That person is Pat Flynn from the Smart Passive Income Blog. He was happy as an architect, but in his new online career, now he is happier than ever.
To Quote Pat: “Now, as an entrepreneur working for myself, I realize that I could have been happy on “the path”, but I wouldn’t have known what it would be like to be this happy.”
